VISUAL ARTS

Our two visual art teachers ensure that all students, starting in kindergarten, learn the craft of production and the scholarship of art history.

All of our teachers work together to connect the academic curriculum to the study of the arts.

Students examine prehistoric cave paintings through and up to postmodern pieces, analyzing them with regard to the time and events that influenced the artist. Working with art in this way adds a rich layer of understanding of the political and social movements that shape nations. Students connect the visual image to the poetic image to the historical image and circle back again, broadening and deepening their perspective of the world around them.

Our students have distinguished themselves in literary contests, in classroom seminars, and in community service. We believe that it is the systematic integration of art and art history throughout our comprehensive curriculum that has developed their thoughtful responses to school and society.

MUSIC

We consider music an essential part of the curriculum from first through eighth grade.

In the elementary grades, students begin by learning to read music, sing together, and to make musical instruments. They learn about rhythm using conga drums, maracas, and cowbells.

In third and fourth grades, students learn to play the recorder, both individually and as a group.

In fifth through eighth grades, the School offers individual instrumental instruction to all interested students. Accomplished students are able to play with the Lyndon Institute High School Band and are selected to participate in the annual statewide music festival.
