Physical Education Program

The aim of the physical education program at Thaddeus Stevens School is to develop and improve students’ personal fitness and motor skills by providing developmentally appropriate activities through purposeful, creative, and enjoyable instruction.

By incorporating challenging yet achievable tasks, the students attain positive attitudes about physical activity and movement.

PRESCHOOL - FOURTH GRADE

The focus will be your child’s locomotor movement. We work on the foundations of human movement such as walking, running, skipping, jumping, galloping, leaping and sliding. We also work on the manipulative skills and personal behaviors. Fitness levels are monitored and assessed throughout the school year.

FIFTH - EIGHTH GRADES

The focus of the upper level grades is agility, strength, cardiovascular health, and flexibility. We continue to work on the foundations of human movement, such as walking or running. We also work on health, nutrition, the human structure, and exercise, with the goal of teaching students how to incorporate these into their daily lives. In the winter, students ski or snowboard at Burke Mountain.

DAILY EXERCISE

Students in all grades walk one mile daily. This is often a favorite part of the day for all of us!

EXPECTATIONS

Every child is expected to participate to the best of their ability. Activities are taught to allow students the opportunity to work together to improve their emerging social and cooperation skills, as well as positive self-concept. Students learn exercises that keep the body in proper alignment, thereby allowing the muscles to lengthen without placing stress and strain on the surrounding joints, ligaments, and tendons.
