Frequently Asked Questions

What are the grade levels at Thaddeus Stevens School?

Thaddeus Stevens School serves preschool through 8th grade. The preschool program has a Montessori curriculum.

Where is Thaddeus Stevens School located?

Thaddeus Stevens is moving to a new location in East Burke, Vermont as of the summer of 2022. The new five-acre wooded campus greatly expands many of the school’s activities, particularly the outdoor science program and daily recreational activities. Our new address is 638 VT-114, East Burke, Vermont.

What distinguishes the school’s academic curriculum from other schools?

Class sizes are small, so the students at Thaddeus Stevens School receive individual attention in a supportive environment. The humanities—literature, history, art, and current events—are taught with an integrated approach so that students develop a comprehensive view of the world. The environmental science program takes advantage of our Vermont campus setting and provides hands-on, field-based experimentation and observation.  The math curriculum progresses through Algebra I and Geometry. We have outstanding visual arts and music programs, and study of the Japanese language and culture is part of the curriculum.

What extracurricular activities are offered?

Extracurricular activities expand the horizons of our students. Clubs are based on the interests of students and teachers together. Some vary from year to year, but clubs have included: comic book club, homework club, MathCounts team, computer programming team, felting club, and art club. We perform musical theatre, puppet shows, talent shows, and concerts. We do mock trials each year and participate in Model UN. As part of our international focus, we partner with a school in Hamburg, Germany for our students to participate in an exchange program.

Does the school take the students on trips?

All our students take field trips, starting with local museums and historic sites. Fifth through eighth graders travel on multi-day trips to Boston, Washington DC and New York City. The travel itineraries are jam-packed with historic and cultural sights. Students love these multi-day trips and learn so much in these urban centers.

How do I apply?

Applying is easy and you’ll receive a quick reply to your application. There is no application fee. Our one-page application form asks for basic information about the student. We then invite the student and parents to an interview and tour of the school.
